Reviving a Legend: Shakedown of the Ex-BTCC BMW E46 at Donington Park

A thrilling day unfolded at Donington Park as we finally put an ex-BTCC BMW E46 Super 2000 touring car back on the track after a year of careful restoration and preparation. This iconic machine, a staple of early 2000s British Touring Car Championship racing, has been with us at BSR for some time.

Our main focus was on the braking system, where we replaced every critical component: brake caliper seals, master cylinders, discs, and pads. Alongside this, we completed smaller servicing tasks to ensure the car was ready to perform at its best. The moment it hit the tarmac, the BMW Motorsport straight-six engine roared to life with an unmistakable sound that reminded us why this car is so revered.

Preparing the BMW for the Track

The restoration process was meticulous. The braking system overhaul was essential because brakes are critical for safety and performance, especially in a car designed for competitive racing. We installed new brake caliper seals and master cylinders to restore hydraulic integrity. The discs and pads were replaced to ensure consistent stopping power and heat resistance. These components are often overlooked but are vital for a car that will be pushed hard on the track.

In addition to the brakes, we performed routine servicing such as fluid changes, filter replacements, and a thorough inspection of suspension and drivetrain components. This comprehensive approach guaranteed the car would not only run but run flawlessly during the shakedown.

The Shakedown at Donington Park

Seeing the BMW back on the track was a proud moment for the entire BSR team. The car completed every test on our program without a hitch. The brakes responded perfectly, and the engine’s smooth power delivery was a joy to experience. The sound of the BMW Motorsport straight-six engine echoed around the circuit, a reminder of the car’s racing heritage and engineering excellence.

We also identified a few minor issues during the test day, which is exactly why shakedowns are so important. These can now be addressed back in the workshop to ensure the car is fully race-ready.

What This Means for the Future

This shakedown marks a significant milestone in the car’s revival. It’s a testament to the quality of work done by the BSR team and the enduring design of BMW’s engineering. Restoring a car like this is about more than just parts and tools; it’s about respecting the history and passion behind it.

For anyone interested in classic touring cars or motorsport restoration, this project highlights the importance of detailed preparation and testing. The BMW E46 Super 2000 remains a legend on the track, and bringing it back to life is a rewarding challenge.
